Adolph Edgar Payne

Adolph Edgar Payne, 88, passed away on Veterans\"™ Day, November 11, 2013 at his home. Al was born on Flag Day June 14, 1925 in Moneta, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Thelma.

Al was a WWII veteran and a retired employee of The News & Advance after 36 years. He was a Little League baseball manager and an avid N.Y. Yankees fan.

Al was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his children Lawrence \"Larry\" Payne, Karen Payne Hopkins and her husband J. W. Hopkins, JR., and Edgar \"Eddie\" Payne, his granddaughter, Julia Hopkins Vitale and her husband Vince A. Vitale and two great grandchildren, Alaina Grace Vitale and Julian Arthur Vitale.

Al had a strong and loving personality as expressed by his relationship with his children. You could often find Al and Eddie together running errands around Lynchburg, taking time to feed the ducks at the lake or enjoying a little \"break time\". Al took pride in his children, grandchild and great grandchildren and they took pride in him also. His family are left with many fond memories of their times spent together.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. David Smith and his staff for many years of excellent care and to Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their support during the last year of Al\"™s life. Because of their care, and Eddie\"™s devotion and love for his father, Al was able to remain in his home with Larry and Eddie for the final year of his life. A private service has been held to honor his life and we are so grateful that we will all be together again someday.

Al was an animal lover and the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Campbell County Animal Shelter, PO Box 659, Rustburg, VA 24588.
