Agnes “June” Decker Stahl, 95, died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. She was born in Nicholson, Pa. on September 24, 1919. June grew up on a farm just west of Factoryville, Pa., and graduated from Factoryville High School in 1937. She went on to graduate from Keystone College in 1939, and then graduated in January of 1942 from Penn State University as a Home Economist. After school, June became employed by the Federal Farm Security Administration as a Home Management Supervisor. In October of 1942, June married Ben Stahl, a Second Lieutenant on active duty during World War II with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During her husband’s service overseas, she taught nutrition to nurses at Keystone College, and also ran the wartime community canning center.
During the years of raising her daughters, June was active in the local PTA, Girl Scouts, 4H, Sunday school, and churches wherever she lived. After moving to Lynchburg, she was active in the Poplar Forest Garden Club, serving as President several years. She was a member of the inaugural class of 1982 of the Lynchburg Master Gardener’s Association, president for two years and emeritus status in 2001. June was a member of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she participated in the activities of Women’s Circle and Honeycomb Bible Classes for many years.
June leaves behind her loving husband, Ben; a daughter, Mary Lou Deuber; two granddaughters: Nancy Gameson (Lyn) and Sharon Richter (Marc); five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred M. Decker and Mary Lou Decker; three sisters: Helen Decker, Ethel Hunt and Ruth Farwell; one brother, Joe Decker; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Paschall; and a daughter, Marjory Stahl Bell.
A Memorial Service for June will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday February 7, 2015 at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ron Cox officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
