Aileen Burford Young

June 22, 1926 — October 13, 2023

Aileen Burford Young went home to be with the lord on Friday, October 13, 2023.

She was the daughter of the late Jack Gus Burford and Eloise Woodroof Burford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Whis” Young, brothers, Roland Hugh Burford, Jack Otway Burford, and Edward Scott Burford, and sisters, Barbara Ann Brown, Carolyn Stinnett, Rosalee Craft, & her much-loved identical twin sister, Geraldine McConnell.

Aileen was born on June 22, 1926, in Waugh, Virgina, she was a graduate of Pleasant View High School, and attended Phillips Business College and Central Virginia Community College. She and “Whis’ were married on March 9, 1946. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe for more than 60 years. For at least 25 of those years, this fine, Christian lady raised her own flowers that she arranged by herself for Sunday services at church. This was just one of her special gifts that brought much joy to others. She also served as Sunday School teacher, church clerk, VBS coordinator, and anywhere else she could fulfill a need. She was always organizing and/or participating in a mission project. Many of her projects included Aileen’s provision of home-cooked food, which was another of those special talents that brought happiness to others; she was a wonderful cook who was especially well-known for her macaroni and cheese and delicious coconut cake.

Aileen was a loving, kind woman who always encouraged others, gave from her heart, and did whatever she could (and then some!) to help other people. She was a wonderful, Godly homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother (Gaga), sister, and friend who touched many lives in a positive way. Her death leaves her family and friends with a mighty void that thankfully can be filled with the memories, examples, and lessons of this faithful woman. Through her life, she brought us joy.

She is survived by her three sons: Allen Young (Patricia) of Madison Heights, John Young (Dianne) of Elon, and Paul Young (Ginger) of Goochland; her sister, Rachel Tomlin of Big Island; nine grandchildren: Allena Tarvin (Mike) of Monroe, Krista Moore (Brad) of Big Island, Spencer Young of Madison Heights, Lauren Carrington (John) of Lynchburg, Craig Young (Angie) of Manassas, Harry Young of Charlotte, NC, Thomas Young (Taresa) of Powhatan, Richard Young of Richmond, and Virginia Young of Richmond; and ten great-grandchildren: Dillon Tarvin (Taylor), Delanie Tarvin (Nico), Maggie Baez (Brandon), Page and Elizabeth Carrington, Arkyn Young, and William, Addison, John Dameron, and Jameson Young.

Aileen also leaves many special nieces and nephews, as well as her neighbor of more than 60 years, Margaret Huffman, and special friend, Nancy Wooten. Special thanks to her caregiver, Vicky Litchford, for the wonderful care she provided in the final weeks of her life.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Monroe with Pastor Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at Centenary Burial Association Cemetery in Naola. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
