Alan James Beard

Alan James Beard, 65, of Goode, VA and formerly of Fairfax, VA, died Saturday, January 29, 2011 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born February 13, 1945 in Atlanta, GA, a son of the late Mary Jeanette Brogdon Beard and A. J. Beard.

Alan was a member of Fairfax Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran having served during the Vietnam War. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from George Mason University in 1973 and his Masters from George Washington University in 1977. Alan retired after 28 years of service with the Arlington County Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court as a Probation Counselor Supervisor. He was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors.             

Alan is survived by his wife of 39 years, Anita Louise Foster Beard; three daughters, Sheri Nelson and her husband, Dave of Leesburg, VA, Shelley Gaddis of Springfield, VA and Ashley Beard and her partner, Jess Mitchell of Ann Arbor, MI; and one granddaughter, Brooke Nelson of Leesburg, VA.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairfax Baptist Church, 10830 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 AM, Friday, February 11, 2011 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles B. Willoughby officiating.  Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, 586-3443.
