Alan Marshall Frye, 72, died April 18, 2019, at Liberty Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. The older son of the Reverend John Marshall Frye, Jr. and Anne Marie Wilson Frye, Alan and his brother Richard spent their childhoods as the sons of an Episcopal priest and his wife, an artist. Eventually, the family settled in Lynchburg, where Alan lived until his death.
For many years, Alan was a member of Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church, where he regularly mimeographed and later photocopied the weekly bulletins. Talking with Alan in his later years meant entering a conversation loaded with puns, mechanical metaphors, and vivid memories of family, childhood, cars, contraptions, and Corgies. His great friend and spiritual mentor, The Reverend Lloyd Lipscomb, helped Alan navigate that world, as did Nancy Downey, his medical and psychosocial advocate for Alan’s last two years. The family is grateful for their support.
Alan leaves behind his brother Richard (Shellion Thomas Frye); two first cousins Sarah Kate Wilson (Paul Petersen) and Susan W. Lyons (Thomas W. Lyons); and two second cousins Michael Timothy Lyons (Elizabeth Lyons) and Stephen W. Lyons (Krista Lindell).
The Reverend Lipscomb will celebrate Alan’s life at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 6th, at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Bedford, Virginia. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
