Albert “Double A” Atkins 98, of Lynchburg, VA., departed this life on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, in Myrtle Beach, SC, surrounded by his family. Albert was born in Lynchburg, VA., on March 4, 1924, to the late Roy and Sarah P. Atkins. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife Susie L. Atkins.
Albert served in the United States Army and in the Korean War. He would later work and retired from Babcock & Wilcox (B&W). Albert was known in the community as a hard worker with his wood delivery business earning him the nickname “Woodman”. Through this example of hard work he inspired young people to achieve their goals through honest work and focus. He would also spend his time at the Flea Market selling his soaps, fragrances, oils, incenses, and flavorings. He enjoyed meeting and talking to everyone he met. He never met a stranger. Most of all he enjoyed driving his Cadillacs.
He is survived by one daughter Janice A. Benejan of Lynchburg, Va., and two sons Nilson V. Atkins (Big Boy) and Hilson L. Atkins, Sr. (Lil Boy) Sonya of Myrtle Beach, SC. He was affectionately known as Pops to his grandchildren. He is survived by his grandsons Gary L. Atkins, Hilson L. Atkins, Jr. of Lynchburg, VA., and PFC Jauron J. Atkins (Baby Boy) of Camp Casey, South Korea. Granddaughters Tonikwa L. Atkins and Bria L. Atkins of Atlanta GA., and Amir D. Atkins of Troy, NY. He is also survived by one great granddaughter Isabella Mann of Troy, NY. He leaves behind a dedicated friend John Ed Cardwell, nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He will be sadly missed by many.
A celebration of life will be held on 11:00 am Monday August 15, 2022, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Chapel. A visitation will be on Sunday August 14, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at the Forest Hill Burial Park located on 2310 Lakeside Drive Lynchburg VA.
