Al Lerner, 68, of Concord left this world for his heavenly home on Friday April 24, 2015.
Al was born in Lynchburg, August 26, 1946, son of Albert Cecil Lerner and Eva Ferguson Lerner. He was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School and attended Central Virginia Community College. Al honorably served his country as a fireman in the U.S. Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
During his life he worked at B&W’s Navy Plant, Hydrate Battery Company, and, most loved, Holy Cross High School.
He is survived by his devoted and loving, life-long friend, Marilyn Bryant; two nephews: Scott Miles (Pam), and Tim Miles; four great-nephews: Jett, Gunter, Austin, and Zach Miles; and many cousins and friends. Special thanks to cousins Fay Bush and Jean Jones.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sister Frances Miles and nephew David Miles.
Al was well travelled in the U.S. and read voraciously. He was very knowledgeable on many subjects. His interests included: nature, lighthouses, sailing, golf, poker, flying, writing and drawing. He especially loved his dog “Bogey” and cat “MeMe”. A fun loving guy, he was a friend to many and never met a stranger.
A Celebration of Life for Al will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2015 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg with the Rev. Calvin Coles officiating. The family will receive friends before and after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Tharp Funeral Home in care of Albert Lerner Funeral Fund, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502 or Sleepy Hollow Feline Rescue Shelter, 125 Columbus Road, Concord, VA 24538.
