Albert Walter Sites Jr.

August 2, 1947 — July 19, 2016

Albert Walter Sites, Jr., 68, of Lynchburg, VA, went home to be with his Lord, Tuesday July 19, 2016, at MCV Hospital in Richmond. He was the loving and devoted husband of Dr. Elizabeth C. Sites. Everyone who met him was aware of his love for the Lord, for his family, for people in need, and for our country. Al was born August 2, 1947 in Harrisburg, PA, the son of Albert W. Sites Sr. and his late mother Betty Jane Huber Sites. Al dearly loved his four children, Albert L. Sites, Sr. and wife Kristen of Mechanicsburg, PA, Christina E. Brenning and husband Dustan of Lynchburg, Seth T. Sites of Crestview, FL, and Benjamin J. Sites and wife Michelle of Appleton, WI., and his 13 grandchildren on earth; AJ, Brandon, Ashleigh, Cassia, Titus, Jael, Liberty, Mikaela, Eliana, Liam, Caleb, Briana, and Erinn, and two grandchildren who preceded him to heaven.

Al was hard working all his life. He served in the Army for four years and was deployed to Vietnam during Tet of ’68. He earned his BS in Horticulture from Pennsylvania State University, after which he worked for Stauffer’s of Kissel Hill, and owned Sites’ Greenhouse in Lancaster, PA. He worked for Property Management Incorporated, IBM, and became a certified Facilities Manager while he was the Manager of Facilities Management for Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg and Allentown, PA. He worked in computer aided design for Ross in Altavista, and finally was a space planner for Liberty University until he retired in 2012. A special joy of his life was personally working for Jerry Falwell, Sr.

He was generous with his time and resources. His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family, camping in the summers, or sharing weeks at the shore. He attended his children and grandchildren’s sports contests, music performances and other activities, and rarely missed any. He was a devoted fan of the Lady Flames basketball team, theater arts, football and other LU student events. For 8 years Al used hospitality with his wife as a dorm parent for an LU dorm. He was an active member of the Koinonia class at Heritage Baptist Church, volunteered in the nursery and took pictures of events for the church.

Even when Al developed multiple health issues, he used this new opportunity to reach out to others who were experiencing health crises too, frequently visiting others in the hospital. Each semester he spoke to LU Critical Care Nursing class, giving them the opportunity to become familiar with the LVAD, diabetes, etc. At Christmas, he delivered homemade cookies to the firemen, EMTs, doctors and nurses who had to work over the holiday.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Heritage Baptist Church by Pastor Nathan Smith. Burial will be held at a later date at Indiantown Gap Cemetery in Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Samaritan’s Purse, the Disabled American Veterans, or The Doorways (formerly The Hospitality House) in Richmond, VA.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
