Alda Simmons Berlin, of Lynchburg, died on Thursday, May 23, 2019. She was the wife of the late Jim Berlin.

She was born on July 11, 1928 in Pendleton County, W. Va., the daughter of the late William Len Simmons and the late Eva Rader Simmons.

Alda attended public schools in Franklin, W.Va., and was a first-generation college graduate from Madison College, now JMU, where she earned her B.S. and M.S. in Education. She taught in Rockingham County, Va., Quantico Marine Base, and Rapid City, S.D.

She married James L. Berlin on June 30, 1961. They lived in many interesting places prior to living in Lynchburg, including Chicago, Ill., Rapid City, S.D., Elizabeth, N.J., Satellite Beach, Fla., and Cranford, N.J.  She enjoyed her family, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Alda loved her old home in West Virginia, and being able to return there all her life. She was even able to spend her 90th birthday at the farm last July. She served as president of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Preservation Society, her childhood church, and attended the annual homecoming there, for over 35 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynchburg.

She is survived by her children; William E. “Bill” Berlin and wife, Hillary, of Arlington and Elizabeth B. “Betsy” Farrar and husband, Joel, of Lynchburg; and her grandchildren, James and Ellie Berlin, and Caroline and Lilly Farrar.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the Pitsenbarger Family Cemetery, in Pendleton County, W.Va. Family and friends will be received following the service at Alda’s old home.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
