Mr. Alfred Emil White, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away peacefully the evening of 31 January, one month shy of his 95th birthday. Born February 28, 1924, Al was the youngest of 3 children of the late Herbert and Mary Elizabeth White. Losing his father at an early age, Al and his siblings were raised in Lynchburg by their mother; a strong, hardworking, and loving woman. Al’s brother, Herbert Jr., and sister, Bernice Mummery, predeceased him.
Al was a 1941 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. Upon graduation, he entered the Norfolk Navy Yard Apprentice School and graduated as an electrician in 1944. Al served in the Army Air Force during World War II where he was trained to work on the B-29 Gunnery Turret. At the end of his tour, Al was part of the occupying forces stationed in Japan immediately after the war. After his time in the service, Al attended Lynchburg College to earn a pre-engineering degree, then continued on at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1951. His first job after graduation was with the Appalachian Power Company in Roanoke, Virginia. Al then spent 18 years working in the Engineering Department at the Lynchburg Foundry followed by 10 years as a Plant Engineer at C.B. Fleet Company, where he oversaw maintenance and upgrades to the assembly line.
A dedicated and loving family man, Al married June Mason of Charlotte County in January of 1955, forming a partnership that lasted for over 63 years. Al and June settled in Lynchburg where they gave back to the community in many ways and forged many close and lasting personal relationships with friends and neighbors over the years. June passed late last year and Al is survived by three warm, wonderful, and successful children. His eldest son, David, lives in Greensboro, NC with his wife Jeannie. June’s eldest daughter, Jennifer (Ginger) lives in Moneta, VA and her youngest daughter, Meredith White Collins, lives in Williamsburg, VA with her husband, Joe. Al’s grandson, Michael White and his wife, Jeans, live in Monroe, VA and are raising Al’s two beautiful great grandsons, Matthew and Daniel. Al’s youngest grandson, Steven White, lives in Greensboro, NC.
Al was blessed with an insatiable curiosity, an innate scientific approach to problem solving, and skilled hands that could repair or build anything he set his mind to. Infused with the can-do spirit of the greatest generation, Al performed nearly all of the repairs needed on the family vehicles, home, and appliances. As the family grew, he upgraded their home with his own hands; adding much needed additional bathrooms, a perfectly finished basement, a beautiful covered deck, and more. Always intrigued and inspired by technology, Al embraced it even more after retirement and took great pleasure in exploring the possibilities of the amateur radio, computer, internet, smart tablets and smart phones, and any other technological marvel that came within his reach. At the age of 94, Al was still planning computer upgrades with his grandson, texting and emailing daily with his children and dozens of others, and reviewing and editing a magazine his daughter publishes. A giant of a man in both spirit and stature, Al was warm and deeply caring of others and embraced a wide network of friends and family with his gentle and loving nature.
Al was a longtime member of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion Post 16, and a past member of the Lynchburg Amateur Radio Club.
The family would like to thank the many friends and caretakers at Runk & Pratt Senior Living for their love, care, and friendship.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory where a visitation will be held Wednesday, February 6th from 10:30 to 11:30 am followed by a graveside service at noon at the Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Al’s favorite charities such as St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Meals on Wheels, or the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Club; or to a charity of your own choosing.
