Alice Kathleen “Pete” Burnette, daughter of James Edward and Clementine Andrews Burnette, was born September 22, 1925, and died August 17, 2023. She is survived by nieces, Page Eney, Gayle Rhodes, Dana Goetz, Susan Jennings (Jim); nephews, James Burnette III (Melinda), Douglas Harvey (Debbie), Thomas Tweedy (Becky), Steven Burnette (Connie), Scott Burnette (Debye), Timothy Harvey (Rick), Russell Burnette, Jr., David Harvey (Phyllis), Paul Harvey (Kendra); Also, her dearest friend, Mary Walker Fletcher who, along with her niece Susan Jennings, took such special care of her during her illness.
Pete was predeceased by four sisters: Lillian Tweedy, Evelyn Burnette, Geraldine Burnette, Helen Harvey and five brothers: Bill, Russell, James, Jr, Dewey, and Carlyle Burnette. She was also predeceased by niece, Rebecca DuFour; nephew, Charles Burnette; and special friend, Nancy Akers.
She graduated from Rustburg High School, Lynchburg College with a BA and the College of William and Mary with a graduate degree in education. She was a member, elder, and teacher at Rustburg Presbyterian Church, a charter board member of the Campbell County Historical Society, executive director of the Campbell County Litter and Recycling Program, and past president of the Lynchburg Area Guidance Association.
She also served as past president of the Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of Alpha XI chapter of Kappa Pi, board member of the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging, and as a board member of the Girls and Women Sports Committee, Virginia High School Association.
Her career in public education spanned 37 years with five years as a teacher and coach at Clifton Forge High School and 32 years at Altavista High School as teacher, coach, and guidance director where she retired in 1982.
Pete Burnette lived her life caring and serving others. Her legacy of love continues to shine in all those she touched.
A graveside service will be held at Presbyterian Cemetery, 2020 Grace St., Lynchburg at 2 pm on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Following the service, family and friends are invited to the Burnette Farm.
