On Saturday morning, October 14, 2017, the Lord swept Alice Vess Nichols, 79, of Big Island, the dearly loved matriarch of our family, to Heaven.
She was born, January 18, 1938, a daughter of the late Emory and Louise Vess.
She was married to her true life partner, Richard Elmer Nichols for 63 years, was a member of Big Island Baptist Church where she was very active. Alice was a long time employee of First Citizens Bank where she retired.
In addition to her husband, Richard E. Nichols of Big Island, she is survived by her daughter, Tonia N. Henry of Coleman Falls; her grandson, Adam N. Henry of Manassas; granddaughter, Samantha A. Overstreet of Lynchburg; her three great-grandchildren, Jensen, Camden and Joslyn; her sisters, Bobbi Forbes, Betty McGlothian of Milboro, Va., and Catherine Windsor of Clifton Forge.
She was preceded in death by her son Ricky Dean Nichols, and her brothers Garnet and Eugene Vess.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Big Island Baptist Church.
A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Mike Watkins and Rev. Bryan LePere officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
