Alison Diane Baker

Alison Diane Baker, 48, died on Wednesday morning, June 20, 2012, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Alison was a person who laughed easily, adored her children, spouse, and grandchildren, and showered the people around her with love.

Alison is survived by her husband, Curt Baker, and daughter, Phoebe Baker, both of Lynchburg, Virginia and daughters Chelsea and Morgan Duval of Brandon, Florida. Other survivors include her grandchildren Barrett and Brenna Jenkins; her mother, Lois Winkelmann Riedel; her father, Peter John Riedel; her sister, Lori Riedel; and her brothers, Peter Jr. and Mark Riedel. Other family members include her step-daughter Jill Ritenaeur (George) and grandson Mason, her uncle Bruce Riedel (Elizabeth) of Alexandria VA, and the family dog, Lola.

Alison loved with her whole heart and sacrificed much for the people around her. Two years ago she gave the gift of life, donating a portion of her liver to a good friend.

Alison was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on January 27, 1964. Her childhood was filled with creativity and imagination. During high school, she spent a year with a host family in Denmark and traveled Europe, participating in symphony performances on her flute. She was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She volunteered at her daughters' schools and supported them as a real estate agent in Plant City, Florida.

Alison moved to Lynchburg almost six years ago. She was a preschool teacher at First Presbyterian, on the board of directors for Miller Home for Girls, and room mother for Phoebe's class at Bedford Hills Elementary School.

A friend to many, Alison loved canoeing, hiking, and frequently welcomed people to her table, whether hosting a party at her home or meeting friends on the patio at Mangias. She discovered the joy of painting in her last few years.

A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, June 24, 2012 at 2:30pm at the Depot Grille. Attire will be casual. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to one of the following: Centra Hospice, 3300 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, Va. 24503, Miller Home for Girls, 2134 Westerley Drive, Lynchburg, Va. 24501 or Madaktari Africa (www.madaktari.org), an organization founded by Dr. Dilan Ellegala to train doctors and other healthcare workers in East Africa.
