Alphonzo Porter went home to be with his Lord on February 5th 2021 at his residence.
He was born in Campbell County, Virginia on March 1st 1935 to the late Clayton Benjamin Porter and Lorraine Margaret Cox Porter.
Alphonzo was proceeded in death by his wife of 40 years Barbara Ann Lathan Porter, his brother Earnest E. Porter, Joseph L. Porter Sr., and his sister Revell P. Smith.
After graduating from Campbell County High School, Alphonzo enlisted in the United States Air Force where he supported the 25th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. After his distinguished service in the military, he enrolled in the Virginia Seminary & College where he met Barbara the love of his life. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964, he began his professional career at the Lynchburg Foundry as an inspector. As a result of his work ethic and leadership, he became a manager of the Quality and Control department. After more than 30 years of service, Alphonzo retired from the Foundry and became a partner at the Allied Cab Company of Lynchburg, VA.
Alphonzo was a dedicated family man who enjoyed competitive golf and bowling. He was also an avid lover of Jazz music. Active within the church and community. As a member of the Trustee Board at Mt. Peeler Baptist church, he contributed time and energy towards several building projects. He was also a member of Old Dominion Lodge189 and a life time member of the NAACP. A humble man with the heart of gold, Alphonzo stood on the foundation of family, a hard work ethic, and a witty sense of humor. He was always willing to help anyone, but we all knew to expect some form of tough love or constructive criticism. If ever there was a problem he was the person to go to, he was definitely an innovative thinker. He lived a great life and his stories were amazing. He definitely set the bar high for not only the family but the entire community. Alphonzo left behind a great legacy, We are proud and honored to carry on his legacy and can only pray that we are as great as he was.
Alphonzo is survived by his two daughters Katrenna P. Jordan (Kenneth) of Lynchburg and Sharon “Kim” Lynch (Kevin) of Chesterfield, VA., seven siblings Joyce Mcray, Rosell Johnson, Lorraine (Margie) Hubbard, Clyde Porter (Carolyn “Pat”), Edgar Porter (Valerie), Cynthia Porter and Perry Porter (Joyce) of Lynchburg. A loving “Papa” to six loving grandchildren, Amy Porter, Kailyn Jordan, Lathan Porter, Nickolas Jordan, Brianna Lynch, Isaiah Lynch and Big Papa to two great-great grandchildren, Taylor Porter and Kimber Porter-Harden. Two God-daughters Carol Savage & Joyce Nicole Brown, two sister in-laws Marie Porter & Wanda Porter and a host of other nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A funeral service (social distancing and masks required) will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory in Lynchburg, VA. Alphonzo will lie in repose Thursday February 11, 2021 from 12 :00 to 6:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service. The family will not have home visitation due to COVID.
