Alvin Kearney Allen

Alvin Kearney Allen, 87, of Madison Heights died Wednesday January 11, 2012. He was the devoted husband of Dorothy Nicholas Allen.

Alvin was born September 28, 1924 in Prince Edward County a son of the late Leavell Allen and the late Inez Coleman Allen. Alvin proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War serving on the U.S.S. Snowden, Donner, Vermilion, and the Graham and also several land based duty stations. Alvin also worked in the Civil Service for many years after his Navy career. Alvin loved the outdoors which included beagle hunting. He also was an avid walking horse enthusiast and sportsman, but most of all he was a faithful family man who loved spending time with them. He was also a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.  

In addition to his wife he is survived by four daughters: Susan Pugh and husband Dave of Madison Heights; Cynthia Neighbors and husband Tommy of Monroe; Lynn K. Cannon and husband Jimmy of Sparta, TN; and Jackie Dickenson and husband Keith of Red Oak; seven grandchildren: Glenn Burford and wife Carla, Jennifer Combs and husband Bo; David Pugh, Jr. and wife JoAnn; Wendy Weaver, Terri Sheppard and husband Brandon; Kelly Lyons and husband Ray; and Kyle Cannon; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a daughter Karen Faye Allen, and three brothers: Wallace Allen, Douglas Allen, and Gene Rhea Allen, and one sister Dot Bruffey.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday January 16, 2012 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. John Ivins and the Rev. Dr. Derrick Hamdy officiating. Military honors to be performed by American Legion Post #16. The family will receive friends at his residence at 466 Oak Grove Drive in Madison Heights.
