Angus Archibald McQueen

Angus A. McQueen, 81, most recently of Lynchburg, Va., passed away on Saturday, December 16th, 2023 after living the last several years with both Alzheimer's and cancer.

Dr. McQueen was born on March 18, 1942 in Fayetteville, NC. He worked a variety of jobs through middle school, high school and college, graduating from Garinger High School in Charlotte and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, NC. He earned his M.Div. and D.Min. from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. and was ordained an evangelist by the Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Martha, and his children Angus III (Melissa) of Ashland, Va. and Angela Wells (Jeffrey) of Danville, Va. He has four grandchildren, Samuel and Grace McQueen of Harrisonburg, Va. and Alexandra and Matthew Wells of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Angus and Marjorie McQueen, and his siblings, James Douglas and Charles McQueen and Romelia Adams.

Dr. McQueen devoted his ministry and his career to caring for children and adolescents at Hughes Memorial Home in Danville, Va. where he helped to integrate the existing program and then developed multiple innovative programs combining professional secondary instruction, intentional life skills training, physical activity, psychological care, behavioral self-management and job training. Students regularly returned to and surpassed grade level while preparing to live as independent adults. Following his retirement as Executive Director, he volunteered for the domestic violence services agency led by Mrs. McQueen.
