Dr. Ann Alsobrook Hicks

June 28, 1942 — January 16, 2024

Alexandria, KY

Dr. Ann Alsobrook Hicks of Alexandria, KY passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease on January 16, 2024. Ann was born June 28, 1942, to the late Robert Lewis and Leah Kay Lewis Alsobrook.  Ann was raised on the Grandview Guernsey Farms in Pfafftown, NC by her father after her mother passed away.  From an early age Ann loved exploring nature and learning.  She graduated from Duke University and went on to obtain her PhD in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University. Ann experienced a different kind of chemistry while at Vanderbilt – meeting Wesley Vernon Hicks Jr. - whom she married.

Ann and Vern settled in Northern Kentucky where she taught in the Chemistry Department at Thomas More University, Crestview Hills, Kentucky for 31 years.  During her tenure Ann was twice awarded teacher of the year (1979 & 1993).  Ann was an enthusiastic supporter of women sports – especially her beloved Thomas More University women’s basketball team.

Ann enjoyed spending time with her husband, extended family, and numerous pets – playing Pollyanna and canasta, bird watching, canoeing, and traveling to see beautiful landscapes and wildlife.  At home Ann spent as much time as her knees would allow in her garden. Ann was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, Ft. Thomas.  Ann will be remembered as always having a warm smile, kind words and willingness to share in a good laugh.

Ann is survived by her husband of 55 years Wesley Vernon Hicks Jr., son Donald Hicks, daughter Polly Hicks and husband Michael Stringer, granddaughters Lucille and Merittia Stringer, sisters-in-law Sally and Celeste Hicks, nephew and niece Michael Hicks, and Amanda Hicks McLean and husband Hamish McLean and their children Rachel and Athol McLean as well as various and sundry friends. Ann is reunited in heaven with her father and mother as well as her father and mother in-law Wesley Sr. and Lucille Key Hicks and her brother-in-law Donald W. Hicks.

Funeral visitation, Sunday, January 21, 2024, 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Highland United Methodist Church, Ft Thomas, KY.  Service to immediately follow the visitation. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Bedford, VA.
