Ann Carter Hutter

d. September 21, 2024

Ann Carter Hutter, 80, died at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on September 21, 2024, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, Leola Carter Hutter and Malcolm Hutter, and her brother-in-law, H. McCord “Mac” Blankenship.

Born at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Ann Carter spent her earliest summers at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, her grandfather’s home at the time. She attended Garland Rodes and was a 1962 graduate of E.C. Glass High School, where she was voted Most Athletic. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Greensboro College in 1966 and her Master’s degree in Teaching from the University of Virginia. Ann Carter was a die hard Cavaliers fan and was proud of her orange and blue vehicles, including her Mini Cooper convertible and her customized Corvair Greenbrier van, which she often took to football games at Scott Stadium. She also had a Corvair Rampside truck, which she painted maroon and gold in honor of the Redskins, and was thrilled to attend a couple of games at Fedex field (when it didn’t break down on the way).

After completing graduate school, Ann Carter began teaching mathematics at Stuart Hall (where she was known as “A.C.”) in Staunton, Virginia in 1968. She became the Assistant to the Headmaster in 1976, until she returned to Lynchburg in 1978 and began her career as a computer programmer at Babcock & Wilcox (now Framatome). She was promoted to supervisor and loved her B&W family, but being the entrepreneur-minded woman she was, she branched out on her own and started her own company in 1987. A.C. Hutter Company offered customized software solutions to clients across the region until she retired in 2016. She began dabbling in eBay sales in 2004 as a hobby and very quickly became a power seller, always enjoying wheeling and dealing. Additionally, she and her friends ran a small business from 2010-14, selling wares at antique malls in Lexington, Verona, and Roanoke. After spending the majority of her life in Lynchburg, Ann Carter moved with her family to Bon Air, Virginia in 2022.

Although she never had children of her own, she gained custody of her niece in 1982 and thought of her as her own daughter. She was a doting mother, always making holidays and birthdays extra special. She attended every play, dance recital, symphonic band concert, tournament, and halftime marching band performance, no matter the weather or distance. Her dedication continued when her granddaughter was on the travel soccer team, and she rarely missed a match.

Some of Ann Carter’s best memories included trips with her daughter to California, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico (where she had her 54th birthday), and the Caribbean Islands. She spoke fondly of her road trip across Europe in the 1970s and travels with her mother around the country. She was also an avid pool player, often found in the ‘90s at the Cavalier Store, holding her own with the locals. She was an avid collector of all things Corvair, notably having 9 Corvairs at once in the 1980s and serving as the Roanoke Valley Corvair Club president. Naturally, she created a software called VairMATE that enabled the club to register attendees of Corvair conventions that she helped run. Ann Carter also collected colorful watches, eclectic hats, Elvis memorabilia, all things Mini Cooper, and especially her bourbon. She had a charismatic personality and wore bright, colorful clothes because she was not one to go unnoticed.

Ann Carter is survived by her daughter, Ann Barbour Iñiguez and two grandchildren, Yesenia Iñiguez and Valentin Iñiguez. Also surviving are her sister, Betty Mac Hutter Blankenship, her feline companions, Jezebelle and Isabelle, and several cousins and dear friends.

To honor Ann Carter’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. An open house will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at 9644 Benbow Road in Richmond, where family and friends are asked to have a drink and share stories in her memory. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society or Stuart Hall School.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
