Ann Lucas Hite

Ann Lucas Hite died on November 16, 2021. She was born Ann McCormick Lucas on July 24, 1926 to the late William Eugene Lucas, Sr. and the late Sara Faber Lucas in Staunton, VA, and grew up just outside of town in a historic home on a large orchard property, called Fox Hill. In 1948 she graduated with a major in music from Mary Baldwin College. On July 23, 1949 she married James Eppa Hite, Jr. and they in due course had two sons: James Eppa Hite, III of Santa Cruz, CA and William Lucas Hite of Forest, VA, all still surviving.
After several moves, in 1960 they returned to Richmond. There she enjoyed playing tennis at the Southampton Recreation Center and singing in the choir at Reveille Methodist Church. At The Virginia Home for the disabled, she helped residents fire ceramics and she crafted the table centerpieces for their Tobacco Ball benefit.
Starting in the early 60s she was impaired by increasingly severe rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and feet. This limited her activities for the rest of her life but did not stop her from doing what she wanted to do. In her later years, she forged through a series of heart attacks, strokes, cancers and other health crises.
Ann and Jim moved to Ivy Hill in 1974. There, she enjoyed playing golf and participating in the Ivy Hill Ladies Golf League. She once helped run the Nine Hole Ladies Invitational. One fine day she scored a hole-in-one on the 15th hole next to her house.
Ann was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Forest where she expressed her love for flowers as chairman of the Altar Guild. She enjoyed fellowship in a community investment club for many years.
During the years 1982 to 2009 she had a shop in the Peddler Antiques Mall in Forest. That enabled her to pursue antique treasures and socialize with the other dealers.
Ann and Jim travelled widely with their sons and friends. The family took two cross-country camping trips and several to beaches. She and Jim visited 48 states and two territories of the US. Between 1968 and 2007 they toured or cruised to the Panama Canal, Hawaii, Alaska, Nova Scotia, England, Scandinavia, Russia, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Spain, the Mediterranean, Australia and New Zealand, around South America, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, China, and the Caribbean several times. In later years, 1989 to 2017, they enjoyed getaway weeks at their partner-shared condo in Litchfield, SC.
In March 2020 Ann was the subject of the cover story “Ann Hite, First Lady of Ivy Hill” in the magazine “Life in the Ivy.”
Ann will be remembered for her cheerfulness and determination. She demonstrated great courage and maintained a positive, upbeat outlook throughout her life. She will be missed by all who knew her.
