Ann “Toddie” Crawford Sharman, age 54, escaped the bounds of earth to go home and be free of pain after a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She was born on February 2, 1965 in Richmond, Virginia but spent her childhood in Rainbow Forest, Lynchburg, Virginia. A 1983 graduate of Brookville High School (Bees we are, and Bees we will always be!), Ann was especially fond of her high school memories that entailed sneaking off behind Rainbow Forest to drink Boone’s Farm wine with her best friends; best friends that never left her side—Becky Evans, Robyn Kramer, Gina Williams, Lori Driskill, Missy Bragg, and Charles Dugger. They all contributed immensely to Ann’s sense of belonging in Lynchburg and to her happiness, even in her last months.
After Brookville, she continued on to complete nursing school at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in 1991 and then earned her BSN from Liberty University in 2006. Despite her twenty year nursing career in numerous doctors’ offices in town and at the local hospitals, it was motherhood that Ann was most proud of. Her love truly knew no limits, as it was not only her own family with whom she showed affection and support but rather, it was the entire Lynchburg community who reaped the benefits of Ann’s soul. Residing for eighteen years in Wildwood subdivision, Ann’s radiant smile brought warmth to all and strangers simply did not exist because she was sure to welcome everyone with open arms. Ann was involved in all aspects of the neighborhood, from sitting on the board of Wildwood pool, to planting flowers, selling luminaries, and even feeding the ducks.
And while those were some lucky ducks, no humans went hungry in Ann’s kitchen either. Whether it was a team meal, a holiday, or just because, bellies were full and laughter echoed always. Ann soaked up sunshine on the beaches of Ocean City, New Jersey and was known to pull over on the side of the road to protect lose dogs and help turtles safely cross. She also loved comedy, murder mysteries, and country music. Most recently, Ann loved her house on Timberlake, her three pit bulls—Zoey, Ellie, and Loc, being a grandmother, and spending time with Josh Pettyjohn whose help was unparalleled in her last years.
Ann was preceded in death by her father, Donald Penny, Sr. Ann is survived by her mother, Carol Penny; her siblings, Kim Banton and husband Phillip Banton of Lynchburg, Shari Martin of Richmond, and Wayne Penny, Jr. also of Richmond; her ex-husband of thirty years, Mark Sharman and their daughters, Lindsey Sharman, Mallory Sharman, and Jamie Sharman, all of whom currently reside in Lynchburg; and her beloved granddaughter, Penelope Morton.
Ann’s life was full and worthy of celebration. Please join her family for a service this Saturday, February 16, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory in Lynchburg. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ann’s memory to the Lynchburg Humane Society.
Our mother, daughter, sister, lover, friend, is finally at peace and surrounded by so many dogs in Heaven.
