Ann moved to Danville, VA with her parents in 1941 and graduated from George Washington High School in 1945. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1949 and taught school at Forest Hills Elementary School in Danville. She married Ephraim (Bud) Henry Phillippe, III on June 13, 1950 and moved to Pompton Lakes, New Jersey where she began a new career as a housewife and mother. Moving with her husband\"™s jobs allowed her to create a loving home in Wisconsin, California, and eventually, Chesapeake, VA. In Chesapeake, Ann took classes to renew her teaching certificate. Working with children with learning disabilities became her focus and she earned a Masters of Science in Education in 1976 from Old Dominion University. Ann retired from Portsmouth Public Schools in 1987.
In 1989, Ann and Bud purchased an apple orchard at the foot of the Peaks of Otter and entered into a new and exciting time. Living in a small cabin at first, Ann did much of the painting and staining of the interior of their new dream home. During the past twenty-one years, Ann helped with the orchard, designed and planted the beautiful flower gardens, walkways and terraces that surround their home, and delighted in trying new varieties of plants. Cooking was a special passion and her large collection of cookbooks served as her reference for wonderful dinners, breads and desserts.
Ann was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a lover of history. She was an early supporter of many historical museums and sites including Poplar Forest, Monticello, Explore Park and Montpelier. An avid reader, Ann also excelled at crossword puzzles and enjoyed listening to all types of educational audio books.
Ann is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bud Phillippe; three daughters, Ginny Laubinger and her husband, Lars of Danville, Susan Stewart and her husband Robert of Boardman, Ohio, and Peggy Ireson and her husband, Robert of Moneta; five grandchildren, Stephen and wife, Michelle, Jared, Emily, Michael and Laura; one great grandson, Lane; a sister-in-law, Elsie Whitfield of Ringgold; and two nieces and a nephew, their spouses and children.
