Anne Carrington Craighill
March 16, 1930 — June 18, 2019
Anne Carrington Craighill, 89, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, June 18, 2019. She was the loving wife of the late Samuel Preston Craighill Jr., for 57 years.
Born Sunday, March 16, 1930 in Lynchburg, Anne was a daughter of the late Richard Alexander Carrington, and the late Anne Harrell Carrington.
In addition to her husband and parents, Anne was preceded in death by her sister, Langhorne Carrington Phelan.
Anne is survived by her brother, Richard Alexander Carrington, III, and three sons; Preston Craighill, III, Ed Craighill, and Rob Craighill, and her ten grandchildren; Anne, Laura, Sally, Marian, Charlie, Corry, Sam, Lawton, Stuart, and Mercer.
Anne always used to say, “if you hear a compliment about someone, make sure to pass it along to them” and fittingly, many memories, stories, and “Mimi-isms” were shared in recent celebration of her life.
Growing up here in Lynchburg on her family’s farm, Westerly Acres, Anne enjoyed riding her horse, Betsy, socializing with her many friends, and visiting her favorite place, Smith Mountain Lake. She graduated from National Cathedral and attended Salem College.
Anne loved fashion and always made sure to look her best, even if it meant being a little bit late. She loved to travel with her sister and best friend, Langhorne, visiting many wonderful places like Paris, Geneva, and Washington, DC.
While climbing trees as a young girl on Oakwood Circle, she made quite the impression on Preston Craighill. He did not forget. They married seven years later when he returned home from the Korean War in 1952.
Anne lived to love those around her. With Preston often away for work travel, Anne “held down the fort,” devoting herself to raising her three boys on Northwood Circle. “Mimi” was a doting grandmother, always ready for a fro-yo trip, dinner at King’s Island, or a ride to Otter Creek on the Blue Ridge Parkway – station wagon full of singing grandchildren. She kept everyone full with her shepherd’s pie and ensured that everyone “stop and smell the roses along the way.”
The family would like to send special thanks to all the “angels” at Westminster Canterbury for their above and beyond care for Anne in her final years.
A celebration of Anne’s life will be conducted at 3 P.M. on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Peter A. Thompson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
