Anne Felicity Grimm, 79, of Sweet Briar, Virginia passed away on August 8, 2017.
Born January 31, 1938 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Olive Wheeler and Douglas Clarke.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth Donald Grimm, with whom she corresponded by letter for ten years before finally meeting him in person and marrying him four years later; a son, Douglas Andrew Clarke Grimm; a daughter, Jennifer Grimm de Mello e Souza; and two grandchildren, Robert Douglas and Sophie Claire.
Anne was a naturalized citizen of the United States, having been born and raised in the United Kingdom. She received her primary education at the School of St. Mary’s and St. Anne’s in Staffordshire, England; and her Master of Arts degrees in English and German from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her professional career included secretarial positions with Columbia Pictures, London, England and with the World Assembly of Youth, Brussels, Belgium. She later was the Director of College Communications at Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Director of College Events at Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia.
In her later years, her community activities included proudly serving as the President of the Amherst Woman’s Club in Amherst, Virginia and volunteering at the Humane Society of Lynchburg, Virginia. She also translated from French to English the history of the World Assembly of Youth, “Facing Communism and Colonialism: Life and death of the World Assembly of Youth (WAY) 1949-1993,” by Dr. Joël Kotek of the Free University of Brussels.
Her personal interests were many and varied, including possession of the most amazing green thumb for gardening that you will ever encounter; sewing; crafting; keeping in close contact with friends and family around the world; ensuring her two children received an English primary school education; encouraging and nurturing her children and grandchildren; and raising multiple and assorted felines who arrived at her front door requesting help and love.
Known for her ebullient wit, irrepressible humor, and engaging personality, she maintained a contagious smile and gentle demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. She was one of those special individuals who left her mark everywhere she went and will never be forgotten.
Memorial Services will be conducted on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 2.00 p.m. in the Sweet Briar College Memorial Chapel with a reception to follow in the Reahard Room of the Sweet Briar Library, Sweet Briar, Virginia.
