Anne Thomas Cardwell

d. October 5, 1931

Anne Thomas Cardwell, better known as Nancy, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2023 after a long illness.

She was born on October 5, 1931, the only child of Henry King and Adelaide MacCleran Thomas of Lansdowne PA. She is survived by Sam, her husband for 68 years, her daughter, Betsy of Asheville, North Carolina, and her son Tom of Leesburg Virginia. She is also survived by Mary Johnson, her best friend and caretaker for the last eight years.

Nancy graduated with honors from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA and earned a master’s degree in economics from The University of Virginia.

Nancy led a very active life, not only as wife, and mother, but also because she was a strong advocate for fair play and equal rights for women. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, and The Lynchburg Junior Woman’s Club. She volunteered for Daily Bread, Meals on Wheels, and the Rivermont Food Bank. She served on the board and as Chairman of The Lynchburg Planning Commission.

While living in Richmond she was instrumental in the formation of The Goochland Fellowship and Family Services which was established to work with children and parents in the county who were in need of special help with their lives. That organization has continued to grow over the years.

For many years Nancy was a member of The Church of the Covenant and was influenced by the late Beverly Cosby, its founder. Later in life she, with her husband, established the Bev Cosby Memorial Fund at The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation. More recently she was also active in Peakland Baptist Church.

Nancy enjoyed many hobbies, the most passionate of which was her golf. Other passions included gardening, church activities, bridge, summers at Wintergreen, and her pet dogs. She was a long time member of Ragged Robin Garden Club and served two terms as president.

Nancy was lovingly cared for at Westminster Canterbury and our thanks go to the medical staff there.

The family is planning a private service of remembrance.
