Annie “Ann” Elizabeth Austin Bennett, age 87, of Big Island, died Monday, January 4, 2016.

She was the loving wife of Robert Thomas Bennett.

A daughter of the late John “Jack” G. Austin and Ruby Johnson Austin, she was born November 10, 1928 in Rockbridge, Va. She was a Sunday School teacher and home maker who enjoyed babysitting, reading, church functions and word puzzles. She was a member of Big Island Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived her children, Linda Burnette and husband, Scott, of Goode; Mike Bennett; grandsons, Matthew Burnette and wife, Beth, of Goode; Ryan Burnette and wife, Kelly, of Forest; great-grandchildren, Noah Burnette, Emma Burnette, and Savannah Burnette, of Lynchburg; sister Jesse Secrist and husband, William, of Las Vegas, NV; Gladys Floyd of Las Vegas, NV,; Nancy Carver and husband, Brad, of Pawley’s Island, SC; brother, Gerald Austin and wife, Mary, of Stanton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Eva Rhodes, Willie Camden, and Helen Slough; brothers, Fred Austin and Walter “Preacher” Austin; daughter-in-law, Melissa Bennett.

A celebration of Ann’s life will be held at Big Island Baptist Church on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mike Watkins officiating. The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Big Island Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 10747 Lee Jackson Highway, Big Island, Va. 24526.
