Annie Zechini

December 28, 1932 — June 19, 2024

On June 19th, 2024 the family of Annie Lee Preas Zechini lost their adored matriarch. She will be greatly missed by her children Vicki Z. Barrett (Tim), Marcus K. Zechini (Bess), Christopher B. Zechini, and Elizabeth Z. Smith (Earl); her grandchildren Allen Zechini, Zeta Dowdy (Keaton), Joseph Barrett (Amber), Isabella Zechini (Sam), Mariana Zechini, Mayzie Zechini (Daniel), Hannah LaFavor (Christian), Liza Zechini (Austin), and Mason Smith; her great grandchildren Leigh LaFavor and Anderson Barrett; and cherished nieces and nephews, some of whom knew her as “Sneecie”. Her many precious grand dogs will also miss her.

She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth R. “Zeke” Zechini, and sisters Helen Marie Ore and Virginia Doris Jones.

Annie was born in a cabin in Evington, VA, to Elizabeth Mason Preas and Allen Keith Preas. She was a graduate of New London Academy. Annie’s time at NLA meant so much to her. She did well academically and participated in many clubs. She earned the starring role of their production of “Jane Eyre.” Annie remained active in the New London Academy alumni association until illness prevented it well into her eighth decade.

Annie served Holy Cross School, first as a volunteer then as school secretary for more than 30 years. Some might say she was the heart of the school during her tenure, the way she was loved by students and staff. She loved them back.

Selfless to her core, Annie gave almost all her time to others. She supported her family in all their dreams and endeavors. She volunteered regularly. For many of her aging and ill relatives she stepped into the role of longtime caregiver.

Annie’s abilities were endless. She sewed her daughter’s wedding dress, she grew prize- winning tomatoes and flowers, she was a voracious reader, she played the piano, and she was an amazing cook (Annie’s bread was legendary). Her greatest ability though, was creating and nurturing an environment of multiple generations who not only love one another, but who truly enjoy being around one another. Family is everything.

On Sunday, July 14th at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA, visitation will be held at 2:00 pm, followed by a celebration of Annie’s life at 3:00 pm.
