Anselm Lynch Ward, Iii

April 22, 1937 — August 22, 2014

Anselm Lynch Ward, III, a retired photographer and antique dealer, died Friday, the 22nd of August at his home in Lynchburg after a long struggle with diabetes. He was 77.

Mr. Ward was born on April 22, 1937 in Lyncburg, the son of the late Anselm Lynch Ward, Jr of Lynchburg and Gladys Hunt Hamilton of Thomson, GA. He attended Lynchburg public schools and the Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Virginia, where he excelled in rifelry. Mr. Ward also attended Lynchburg College for several years. Afterwards he served in the Virginia Army National Guard.A self-taught photographer, Mr. Ward owned and operated Ward Portraits, a photographic studio located on the corner of 11th and Church Streets in the historic Ward building, which also housed the Floyd Ward School of Dancing, a longstanding family enterprise of his Aunts Floyd and Virginia Ward. Mr. Ward was well known for flattering portraits which deftly captured the personality of his subjects. Always an individualist, Mr. Ward did not join the rising tide of local franchised portrait studios and reluctantly left commercial photography. He later turned his knowledge of antique art and furniture into a small business which he operated in the Boonsboro district of Lynchburg. Mr. Ward also attending Lynchburg College for several years.

Mr. Ward, inspired by the service of his paternal uncle Colonel Peter O. Ward Sr. in WWII, became a lifelong student of 20th century U.S. military history, and was keenly appreciative of the sacrifices of America’s “Greatest Generation” in defending democracy. In addition to curating his collection of military memorabilia, Mr. Ward was a patron of the Tank and Ordance War Memorial Museum in Danville, Virginia, and the General George Patton Museum in Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Mr. Ward, a formidable pool shot, was affectionately known as “Pops” to friends of all ages. As his declining health permitted in recent years, he greatly enjoyed “running the table” at the nearby Cavalier Store with his friends.

Mr. Ward was previously married to Peggy Walker, also of Lynchburg, and had two sons, James, now a stockbroker in Atlanta, Georgia, and Nathaniel, a scientist and community college lecturer in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Ward was afterwards married to the late Mary Rutledge Clement of Lynchburg, and had one son, the late Henry Carter Ward.

Mr. Ward is survived by his sister, Nathalie Ward Heppner of Coleman Falls, Va, his son James Hamilton Weymouth, daughter-in-law Shelley Weymouth and grandaughter Elizabeth Weymouth of Atlanta, GA, his son Nathaniel Dearing Weymouth of Dallas, Texas; his nephews, Colonel (ret) Donald Gray Heppner, Jr of Vienna, VA, David Alexander Spotswood Heppner, Sr and Christopher Lynch Heppner, Sr of Lynchburg, VA, his niece, Virginia Heppner Gay of Lynchburg, and four great-nephews and four-great nieces.

A private family service and internment will be held at a later date.
