Arthur Duncan Saunders
Arthur Duncan Saunders, 75, of Lynchburg died Tuesday, January 29, 2013. He was the husband of Barbara Howerton Saunders for 55 years. Born October 19, 1937, in Lynchburg, Duncan was a son of the late Thomas Arthur Saunders, and the late Mabel Reid Saunders.
In addition to his wife, Duncan is survived by three sons: A.D. Saunders and his wife, Kathy, of Forest, Nicholas (Nick) Saunders and his wife, Angela, of Forest, and Joseph Saunders and his wife, Kerri, of Lynchburg; six grandchildren: Tiffanie Ashmore and her husband, Bryce, of Seffner, FL, Brad Saunders, of Forest, Hunter Saunders, of Forest, Peyton Saunders, of Forest, Reid Saunders, of Lynchburg, and Mitchell Saunders, of Lynchburg; a great granddaughter: Lillia Ashmore, of Seffner, FL; and a brother, Thomas Saunders and his wife, Gail, of Lynchburg. Duncan was an accomplished athlete at E.C. Glass High School where he played football, basketball, and ran track. He carried his football talent to the next level; playing football at Virginia Tech. Continuing his education he earned his electrical engineering degree. Duncan was very involved with community activities in the Lynchburg area. He served as President of the City Athletic Boosters, coached Lynchburg Little League Baseball and Football, was involved with the Lynchburg YMCA, he was Chief of the Nottaway Federation of the Indian Guides, President of Quarter Century Club \"" GE/Ericsson. Duncan was a member of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, where he served as Vestry Senior warden and a member of the choir. Duncan proudly served our country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Employed for 40 years, at Ericsson/GE, Duncan was instrumental in the development of products that led to patents. He retired from GE/Ericsson as Manager-Computer Aided Design & Graphics. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and being with his family and friends at his second home, Willow Lake. Everything Duncan did, he gave 110 percent.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. A Celebration of Duncan\"™s Life will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, February 1, 2013 at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church with Rev. Catharine Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
