A great and gentle heart beat for the last time when Arthur Roy Smith, Jr., 92, of Lynchburg, died at Lynchburg General Hospital on April 3, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Donnelly Smith.
Born in Macon County, MO, Art was the only child of the late Eva and Arthur Roy Smith. He grew up in Moberly, MO and was educated in the public schools and Moberly College. Later, he studied aeronautical drafting in Wichita, KA. During World War II he worked for Curtis Wright Aircraft Corp. as project coordinator on engineering changes for the C-46 cargo ships and advanced twin engine AT-9 trainers. He traveled between St. Louis and many companies producing these planes. One such trip brought him to Virginia. After the war, he was employed by Farm Bureau Insurance, later named Nationwide Insurance, for 35 years.
Art was a member of Higbee Masonic Lodge in MO for 65 years and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church for 50 years, where he taught Sunday School, was Chairman of the Board and later a Trustee.
Art loved his sports cars, books, roses, and music. He had a kind and generous spirit and will be missed by his family and friends. In addition to his wife, Evelyn, survivors include son, Arthur Gary Smith (Judy); and daughter, Patricia S. Dalton, of Lynchburg; son, David Shane Smith (Martha) of Midlothian; daughter, Holly S. Kenney (Con) of Alexandria. His special grandchildren include Melissa Dalton of Boston, MA; Landon Smith (Kristen) of Charlotte, NC; Neil Kenney of Alexandria; and Forrest and Evelyn Smith of Midlothian. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Helen Donnelly and Ann King of Chilhowie, VA, and Jane Kitinger of South Hill, VA.
Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 p.m. tonight at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 6th at Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
