In Loving Memory of Barbara Smith LeFew
Barbara Smith LeFew passed away on February 3rd, 2024, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Lynchburg, Barbara's journey through life was marked by her dedication to education, service, and the enduring love of her family.
Barbara attended EC Glass High School, where she excelled academically as an honor student and was a majorette in the school band. She attended Lynchburg College, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, and later obtained Master’s and Specialist degrees in Education.
She served as a medical professional for 50 years at Centra Heath, where she contributed as a Medical Technologist, directed the School of Medical Technology, and concluded her career as the Laboratory Computer Systems Manager. Barbara also served as an adjunct professor at local colleges, leaving a lasting impact on students through her teachings in microbiology.
Barbara's life was enjoined with that of her loving husband, Dewitt T. (Buddy) LeFew Jr., with whom she shared 64 years of marriage until his passing. She is survived by her two sons, Tad and Kevin, their spouses, Pam and Ericka, seven grandchildren - Ashley, Witt, Claire, Sam, Hope, Madison, and Sophie - and three great-grandchildren, Abby, Finn, and Charlie. She was the daughter of the late Radford Spencer Smith Jr. and Edna Stephens Smith, and is survived by her sisters, Susan and Lera, while her brothers, Macon and Radford, preceded her in death.
In her retirement years, Barbara devoted her time to researching family genealogy and became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She continued to pursue her interests in painting, flower and tomato gardening, and anything her grandchildren asked of her. She was an active member of First Methodist Church (now Chestnut Hill UMC), contributing to the community by tending to the nursery and participating in the lady’s circle activities.
Known as a friend to all, Barbara's kindness, encouragement, and empathetic nature left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her. Her absence will be keenly felt by family, friends, and the community she so lovingly served.
A graveside service to celebrate Barbara's life will be held at Fort Hill Memorial Park on Friday, February 16th, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family kindly requests considering a small donation to the Lynchburg Humane Society in Barbara's honor (Lynchburg Humane Society, 1211 Old Graves Mill Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502, www.lynchburghumane.org/donate-now).
