Barrett Krausz Stephens, wife of retired U.S. Foreign Services Officer, Bart Nelson Stephens, died on March 13, 2017 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Mrs. Stephens was born in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College with majors in art and biology in 1945. From 1946 to 1949 she worked as a photogrammetrist at the U.S. Army Map Services in Washington, D.C.
She accompanied her husband to Foreign Service posts in Greece, Germany, Poland, Austria and Thailand from 1950 until 1982 when he retired from the Senior Foreign Service. In embassies and consulates in these countries she supported cultural programs for which her husband was responsible. She took part in complimentary representational and social duties and activities when she entertained foreign government and cultural leaders, often at large events. In particular were receptions for the 110 member Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra during its 10 day visit to Poland in 1964.
Her art background and expertise enabled her to design and decorate the interiors of many cultural centers and embassies, such as the new four story Amerika Haus (cultural center( in Nuernberg, Germany in 1957 and the ambassador’s residence in Bangkok, Thailand in the 70’s. In the latter city in 1980 she also organized and presented an acclaimed charity fashion show on the occasion of the Queen Mother’s birthday.
Mrs. Stephens was an artist whose work won prizes in the 1966 Department of State exhibition. In 1967, she displayed in the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center her own work together with Polish paintings she and her husband had collected in Poland during their tour in that country.
The “Foreign Service Journal,” a publication of the American Foreign Service Association, printed four of her paintings on four different covers of their magazine.
Mrs. Stephens was also active in the Republican Lynchburg City Committee and also served as a delegate to state conventions.
Survivors include four daughters, Tracey Stephens of Nutley, New Jersey, Schuyler Stephens of Falls Church, Virginia, Holly Stephens Tunstall of Vienna, Virginia, Sinah Stephens Kostik of Wixom, Michigan and five grandchildren.
