Barry Wendell Maxey, 59, of Winchester, Virginia, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Born October 13, 1955, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late David Monroe Maxey, Sr. and Evelyn Tanner Maxey. Barry professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church in Gladys on October 3, 1965.
Barry is survived by his three brothers, David Monroe Maxey, Jr., and wife, Susan, Leslie Neil Maxey and wife, Patsy, and Timothy Edward Maxey, Sr. and wife, Bobbie, and one sister, Kathy Lynn Brown, and husband, Gary, all of Rustburg; seven nieces and nephews, Joy Martin, and husband, Thomas, Holly Booker, and husband, Clayton, Timothy Maxey, Jr., Heath Maxey, Kelly Brown, Paige Maxey and Mickie Maxey; six great-nieces and nephews, Chandler, Alexus, Caelyn and Joshua Booker, and Austin and Andrew Martin; and a precious aunt, Betty T. Hamlet, of Gladys, who was like a second mother to him. He is also survived by two uncles, Marshall Tanner, Jr. and wife, Doris, of The Villages, Florida, Neal Tanner and wife, Barbara, of Danville; an aunt, Nancy Tabor, of Concord, and numerous cousins.
Barry graduated from Rustburg High School in 1974. He worked in the printing industry for over twenty five years before going to work for Walmart in 2011. He was a hard worker who was determined to be the best at whatever he did. Barry will be remembered for his big heart. He was a loving brother and uncle, filled with compassion and concern for others. He was a fiercely competitive chess player who hated to lose. Barry loved his cats, and in addition to his own, would feed any stray that happened by.
A Service of Remembrance and Witness to the Resurrection will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church, 1090 Mollies Creek Road, in Gladys, with the Rev. Dave Heerspink officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice.
