Bernard Alvin “Pete” Burley

Bernard Alvin \"Pete\" Burley, 91, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, February 14, 2010.  He was the husband of Lucille Carleen Hudson Burley for nearly 68 years.

Mr. Burley was born Friday, January 3, 1919 in Amherst County, VA, a son of the late Howard Thomas Burley and Ola Stinnette Burley.  He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He was retired from John P. Hughes where he was an auto mechanic for 30 years.  He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and American Legion Post #16.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, James D. Burley, Sr., of Lynchburg, Barbara Hannabass of Bedford, Patricia Williams of Lynchburg, and Bonnie Campbell and husband, Patrick, of Roanoke; twelve grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and his sister, Ann Creasy of Bedford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard Burley, Jr., James Burley, Jesse Burley, Julian Burley, and Stanley Burley; and his sisters, Helen Arrington, Virginia Foutz, Edith Arrington, and Shirley Byrd.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home.  Services will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in the mausoleum of Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Daniel Eubank and the Rev. Maurice Coffey officiating.  Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.  Military honors will be provided by the National Guard.
