Bernard was born on April 16, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and was the oldest son of the late Clarence Yeatts and the late Lora Towler Yeatts. He joined the United States Navy in 1945 during the last months of World War II and is a veteran of the Korean War. After being honorably discharged as a Chief Petty Officer (Chief Boatswain’s Mate) in the Navy, Bernard spent the rest of his career in civil service as a Merchant Marine.   Bernard met his wife of over forty years, Aida Jakaria Yeatts, while he was stationed in the Philippines.

In addition to his parents, Bernard was preceded in death by his sisters, Clara McCormick, Evelyn Scott and Loreen Stephens.

In addition to his wife, Bernard is survived by his children, Sherry Yeatts Hutter and her husband, Chris, of Richmond, and Sean Yeatts, of Forest, and his grandchildren, Christian and Jacob Hutter, of Richmond. He is also survived by three adopted children, Gerfa Lunsmann and her husband Heiko, of Lynchburg, Zenaida Goins and her husband Robert, of Lynchburg and Enrico Yeatts and his wife Connie, of Virginia Beach, and each of their children, respectively, Joshua Driskill, Kevin Lunsmann, Jared Goins, Eric Yeatts and Edward James Yeatts.

He is further survived by his siblings, Dorothy Cofer, of Memphis, Tennessee, Ruby North, of Evington, Clarence Yeatts, Jr. and his wife Janet, of Madison Heights, James Yeatts and his wife Hollis, of Goode, and Becky Mack and her husband, Gregory, of Atlanta, Georgia, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bernard or “Pop” was a beloved father, brother and husband who loved music, politics, classic movies, working on his yard and playing his guitar. Pop participated in the Inchon Landing during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his

distinguished service and traveled and lived all over the world. Pop was also a great storyteller who carried with him a wealth of wisdom and wit and he’ll always be remembered for his sharp sense of humor along with his kind and generous spirit. Pop, also affectionately known as “Dad” by his family from the Philippines, will be missed by everyone whose lives he’s touched throughout the years and will never be forgotten thanks to all the wonderful memories he left behind.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory in Lynchburg. A celebration of Bernard’s life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Larry Brodie. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels or the American Legion.
