Bernice Brubaker Hopkins, 97, peacefully passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at The Carrington in Lynchburg, VA. She was born on January 1, 1917 in Preble County, Ohio to Charles and Laura Ethel Filbrun Brubaker.
In 1939, she married Everett Harold Hopkins, a university professor, college educator, researcher, and administrator, having met while she obtained her undergraduate degree from Miami University of Ohio. He predeceased her in 1998 after 59 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her parents, brother, Merrill Filburn Brubaker, and sister, Mildred Brubaker Shoup, all of Ohio. She is survived by three sons, Jay (Beverly) Lynchburg, VA., David (Marie) Chicago, IL., and Richard (Jeannette) Kansas City, MO., seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. She accompanied her husband during his WWII service in the Navy, after which they resided in Pullman Washington (1946-1951), St. Louis, MO (1951-1961), and Durham, NC (1961-2011) coincident with her husband’s appointments at Washington State University, Washington University, and Duke University.
While in Durham she was an active member of the Durham Arts Council and a lifetime member of Halcyon Club. Having received her master’s degree in Gerontology, she served as Program Director for the Orange County Council on Aging (Chapel Hill, NC.) until her retirement in 1983.
