Bertram Oglesby Taurman, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., died Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at his residence, following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Bertram O. and Thelma Watts Taurman.
Born January 23, 1931, in Richmond, Va., he graduated from the old John Marshall High School in 1948. In 1952, he earned a B.S. Degree from V.P.I., and immediately began a life-long career in the insurance industry.
In November 1952 he married Jane Royster of Richmond, formerly of Bedford County. Their first year was spent in New York City, where he was employed by the Royal Liverpool Insurance Group. They returned to Richmond in 1953. In 1957 they moved to Roanoke and in 1960 to Raleigh, NC as a Special Agent/State Agent for The Royal. In 1963, Bert returned to New York, and was then appointed to Superintendent, Multiple Lines Department for the Royal’s Nashville, Tenn. Regional Office.
In 1964 he and Jane moved to Lynchburg, where he held Special Agent positions for two companies. In 1971 he became associated with Scott Insurance. He continued that association as a Career Life Insurance Agent until his retirement in 1996.
He was a strong proponent of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned his Eagle Scout Badge in 1948. He enjoyed many interests and hobbies, and for many years, with the help of others, compiled his family’s genealogy. He also served in a number of capacities in business and community affairs.
Bert is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 65 years. Also surviving are a son CAPT Keith Lewis Taurman, USNR (Ret.), and his wife, Martha, of Virginia Beach; a daughter, and accomplished artist, Suzanne T. Steele; and three grandchildren, Charles K., Jane Claire, and Olivia Charlotte. He was predeceased by a grandson, Gregory Allen Taurman of Brunswick, Maine.
He is survived by a brother-in-law Dr. R. Lewis Royster, Jr. and his wife, Susanne, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and two nephews and two nieces. He leaves many very special friends.

A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Ross Wright officiating.
