Betty Ann Carlton Ritter, 84, of Forest, died Thursday, February 04, 2016. She was the devoted wife of the late Clay Jessup Ritter for 59 years.
Born August 6, 1931 in Plant City, FL, Betty was a daughter of the late Chester Clarence Carlton and the late Ora Mae Stock Carlton.
In addition to her husband, and parents, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Carlton; four sisters, Mary Gresham, Alice Jenrette, Lucille Causey and Lois Carlton; and one granddaughter, Lyndsey Parks.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Mary Lee Parks and her husband, Forrest, of Fayetteville, AR, and Linda Carroll and her husband, Joe, of Forest, five grandchildren
Jack Carroll, of Baltimore, MD; Ann Carroll, of Savannah, GA; Alex Ritter, USN, Sigonella Naval Air Station, Sicily; Grace Carroll, of Forest; and Katie Parks Smittle and husband Joe of Talala, OK; and one great-grandson, Gibson Smittle.
Betty spent her life caring for others. As a young bride moving frequently with Clay’s work, Betty located the nearest Red Cross office to volunteer her services. After settling in Fairfax, VA, to raise her family, Betty joined Meals-on-Wheels becoming their driver coordinator. Betty was always active in her church. As a member of Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax, she served on the altar guild and was part of the “Tuesday Lunch Bunch” who served lunch to the local community while attendees heard the Good News. To become acclimated to her new home in Forest and to continue serving others, Betty again joined Meals-on-Wheels and also the Bedford Ride. Betty and Clay were members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where she served as Altar Guild director. Most recently Betty worshipped at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church with her family.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Forest, with the Rev. Catharine Montgomery officiating.
