Betty Jean Taylor Carden, 85, Rustburg, died Saturday morning, January 19, 2019, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Luther I. Carden, Jr., for 65 years.
Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, August 26, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Edward Taylor Sr., and the late Elsie Virginia Foster Taylor. She was a devoted member of Rustburg Presbyterian Church, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to many. She was a member of a senior club and so loved the activities and trips with the group.
Betty worked as a magistrate in Campbell County for many years and then at Chapstick which later became Tri-tech.
Betty is survived by her two daughters Sandra C. Burleigh and her husband Phillip, of Concord, and Pamela Jean Carden, of Rustburg; two grandchildren , Ryan Burleigh Ellithorpe and her husband Daniel, and Justin Phillip Burleigh and his wife Tiffiney; five great-grandchildren, Emerson Kate Ellithorpe, Andrew Phillip Ellithorpe, Henry Bryant Ellithorpe, Cash William Burleigh, and Reese Elizabeth Burleigh. Betty is also survived by three sisters and a very special brother-in-law, Mary Lee Hege, Virginia Pickrel, and Patricia Doss and her husband Glenn; two sisters-in-law, Diane Taylor, Doris Witt and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Hundley Taylor.
The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a Memorial Service to follow at 2 p.m. in the Chapel with Pastor Terri Cornwell, officiating. Interment will follow in Cumbie Memorial Cemetery, Rustburg, Virginia.
