Betty Humphrey Gimbert passed away on January 17, 2022, surrounded by her family at her home in Bedford, VA. Betty was born on her family farm in Louisa, VA on October 27, 1936, to the late Frank Patterson Humphrey and Virginia Shipp Humphrey.
Betty spent her childhood on her farm, then in her teens moved to Charlottesville, VA where she met and married W. Taylor Gimbert Jr. Together they had four children whom they raised in Bowie, MD.
Betty was a devoted wife and mother as well as a multitalented woman. She enjoyed singing and had a lovely voice. Betty was a talented seamstress making many of her own clothes as well as her children’s. With her children all grown she began making and selling historically accurate clothes for the American Girl dolls. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, painting, as well as making flower arrangements. Betty was a wonderful cook and baker, her children, their spouses, and grandchildren will always remember her fried chicken, homemade pizza, and spaghetti sauce that she made from scratch starting with tomatoes she canned herself and of course her molasses cookies that no one has been able to duplicate.
Betty was a member of the Lane High School class of 1955 in Charlottesville, VA. A member of the DAR, a former Girl Scout and a Job’s Daughter. She was very active in the Kenilworth Elementary School PTA and was an AWANA leader at Grace Baptist Church in Bowie, MD.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her Stepfather Millard Landon Legg and her sister, Gloria Swanson Humphrey. In addition to her husband W. Taylor Gimbert Jr., Betty is survived by her four children and their spouses, David K. Gimbert (Marcia Emerson), Susan G. Hale (M. Wayne Hale), Sandra G. Etchison (C. Brian Etchison) and Richard L. Gimbert as well as her 10 grandchildren, Taylor A. Gimbert, Elizabeth H. Helms, Emily E. Eckenrode, Timothy W. Hale, Patricia H. Wilson, Craig B. Etchison, Ellen L. Etchison, Evelyn E. Morris, Madeline V. Etchison and Nicholas A. Gimbert. Three Great-grandchildren, Makayla Eckenrode, Aubree Eckenrode and Hayden Eckenrode.
