Betty Ruth Mitchell Garbee

Betty Ruth Mitchell Garbee, who resided at Westminster Canterbury, 501 VES Rd., died Jan. 29, 2021. She was the wife of the late Walter Addison Garbee Jr.

Born Sept. 29, 1922, in Kaufman County, Texas, Betty was the daughter of the late Albert Theophilus Mitchell and Maude Mahalia Duncan Mitchell.

Betty graduated from Kemp High School in Texas and from Parkland Hospital School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She received her training in anesthesia at La Garde General Hospital in New Orleans, LA.

A World War II veteran, Betty joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp. in 1944, and served her country as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the Pacific Theater on the island of Saipan. She was a First Lieutenant.

For many years, Betty used her training in anesthesia in Lynchburg. She worked at Lynchburg General Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Virginia Baptist Hospital, and Central Virginia Training School and Hospital.

Betty was a faithful member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a longtime member and former president of The Women’s Club of Lynchburg and a member of the Blue Ridge Garden Club. Betty enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, playing bridge, and watching Virginia Tech basketball and football games.

Betty is survived by three children, Bronwyn Garbee Cowell (John) of Bristol, Va., R. Mitchell Garbee (Patty), and Susan Garbee Brandt (Leon) of Lynchburg. Betty also is survived by four grandchildren, Greg Garbee of Charlottesville, Va., Ben Garbee of Charleston, S.C., and Tim Brandt (Jaclyn), and David Brandt (Paige) of Lynchburg, two great-granddaughters, Addison Brandt and McKenna Brandt, a sister, Barbara Sullivan of Mesquite, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Mitchell, four sisters, Faye Wimpee, Ruby Cloyd, Doris Price, and Genevieve Pinson, and a great-grandson, Luke Parker Brandt.

There will be a private interment at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to West Lynchburg Baptist Church or the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Endowment Fund.
