Betty Sue Moehlenkamp

Betty Sue Moehlenkamp, 79, of Lynchburg, died suddenly Thursday, November 11, 2010. She was the wife of the late Jack Moehlenkamp, former Randolph Macon Women\"™s College music professor and conductor of the Roanoke Symphony.

Betty Sue was born in Elizabeth, N.J., raised in Bethlehem, PA and came to Lynchburg in 1949 to attend Randolph Macon Women\"™s College. She was a highly acclaimed student, receiving membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Outstanding Young Women of America. She was awarded a Fulbright Grant to study dance at the Sorbonne in Paris, France and received a master\"™s degree in dance from Sarah Lawrence College. Pursuing a lifelong passion for dance, she worked with the Martha Graham Dance Company and many noted choreographers, including Jose Limone and Merce Cunningham. She taught modern dance at Sweetbriar College and the University of Maryland and served as chairman of the Dance Department at both Randolph Macon Women\"™s College and the University of South Florida.

In the Lynchburg area, she was continually involved in dance education as an instructor and choreographer for the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, Forest Dance Academy and several E.C. Glass musical productions. She founded the Dance Theatre of Central Virginia in 1982 which provided innovative dance performances to the Lynchburg area for 20 years. A very active contributor to community arts endeavors, Betty Sue served as a member of the Lynchburg Arts Council and the Lynchburg Community Concerts.

Predeceased by husband, Jack, and sister, Phyllis Stonebrook, she is survived by three children: Christopher and his wife Nadine of Woodbridge, VA; Elizabeth Ann Dudley and her husband Witcher of Maidens, VA; and Mark and his wife Stephanie of Evington, VA; four wonderful grandchildren Michael, Elizabeth, Megan and Jackson; and sister, Lanny Johnson of Chevy Chase, MD, and brother, John Stoneback of Riegelsville, PA.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 PM on November 27, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A reception for family and friends will follow the service.
