Bill Carrington

William \"Bill\" Alexander Carrington, 94, of Lynchburg, died peacefully at Westminster-Canterbury on Sunday, August 1, 2010. He was the loving husband of the late Norvell Nicholas Carrington for 67 years. He was born on April 1, 1916 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Margaret Wilson Carrington and the late Alexander Broadnax Carrington.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Martha C. \"Marty\" Smith and her husband, Jerry, Anne C. Crowder and her husband, Bruce and Mary C. Bice and her husband, David all of Lynchburg; his sons, William A. \"Sandy\" Carrington, Jr. and Meg Carrington of Lynchburg and Robert C. Carrington and his wife, Anne of California; his grandchildren, William B. \"Billy\" Smith and his wife, Jennifer, Robert C. \"Bobby\" Smith, Philip A. Smith and his wife, Kelly, Catherine A. \"Katie\" Carrington, Erin Crowder Hare and her husband, James, Carson C. Crowder, MichelleBiceNorton and her husband, Matt and D. Byron Bice Jr. and his wife, Lara; his great-grandchildren, Colin and Danielle Smith, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, William Alexander \"Alex\" Carrington, III, a sister, Margaret Carrington, a half-brother, Royal Carrington, and a half-sister, Nancy C. Beggs.

Bill was a devoted member of St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church since 1942. He was a member of the choir at the church for 58 years and also served as senior warden.

He retired as president of Co-OperativeBuilding and Loan Association, which is now BB&T Bank. Bill volunteered with the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, Virginia Baptist Hospital where he was a former trustee and on the discharge team; he was the sing-along leader at Westminster-Canterbury and a board member and driver for Meals on Wheels. He also served as past president of the YMCA of Central Virginia, Lynchburg Lions Host Club and the VA Savings and Loan League.

Although Bill was always involved in many activities, he derived his greatest joy in life from his large and loving family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. J. Douglas Wigner and the Rev. Catharine Montgomery officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. in the Commons at Westminster-Canterbury.

The family would like to thank Bill\"™s extended family on the 5th Floor Hearthside at Westminster-Canterbury for their care and love.
