Billie Newman Carwile

Billie Newman Carwile, of Lynchburg and Bedford Co., died on December 22, 2020. She has reunited with her husband of 68 years, Revely B. Carwile, who died in 2017. Billie was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Evington, VA, to the late Warren E. and Ethel Moore Newman. Last of her immediate family, she was pre-deceased by brothers, Jack Newman and Warren Burleigh Newman, and sisters, Jean N. McCrickard, Shirley N. Wilkerson, and Phyllis N. Wood.
Billie is survived by five children, Thomas R. Carwile (Mary), Daniel N. Carwile, David N. Carwile (Amy), Revely B. Carwile, Jr., and Nancy C. Friend (David), all of Lynchburg; by five grandchildren, Andrew E. Carwile of Virginia Beach, Zachary Carwile of Lynchburg, Jessica Carwile of Savannah, GA, and Mary Ann Carwile and Jamie Scott Carwile of Lynchburg; sisters-in-law, Norma R. Carwile of Rustburg and Sharon Newman Campbell of Pamplin, and by her devoted caregiver, Carolyn Crews, of Home Instead Senior Care.
Billie was valedictorian of Brookville High School in 1948, a 1965 graduate of Lynchburg College, and received her M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. Billie taught history in Lynchburg public schools for over 29 years and coached the Heritage ACE team. From 1982-96, Billie graded regional Advanced Placement History exams. Billie for 30 years was an adjunct professor of history at Central Virginia Community College and Averett University, retiring in 2003.
Billie loved flowers, gardens, antiques and archaeology. An avid genealogist, Billie traced multiple family lines to the Jamestown colony and their home countries. Billie was a member of the Old Dominion Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, past regent of Col. Charles Lynch Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, past board member of the Campbell County Historical Society, and the Bedford Historical Society.
There will be no visitation or formal services due to Covid-19. A private graveside service will be performed at the Carwile Family Cemetery, Three Creeks Road, Campbell County.
