Billy Edward Goodman

Billy went home to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 86. He passed away from this Earth on October 23, 2023. He was born on January 22, 1937 to the late Sallie Phillips Goodman and the late Stephen O. Goodman.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sara Coulter Goodman, two sons Scott (Tamara) and Mark, two grandsons Andrew and Jeremy, a brother Bob (Barbara) and several nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends. In addition to his parents, a sister Betty Goodman Smith preceded him in death.

Billy attended New London Academy and following his graduation began working at Lynchburg Foundry where he retired after 40 years of service. His friends and coworkers at Lynchburg Foundry knew him by his nickname, “Big John.”

He was an excellent handyman at fixing things around his home. He enjoyed his fishing vacations to the Outer Banks and attending his morning breakfast meetings at “the office” (Hardee’s) with his special friends.

Billy was a great man of faith and studied his Bible often. He was a long-term member of Thomas Road Baptist Church where he attended until health issues hampered such. He continued to attend service via broadcast.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 27, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg, VA 24502 at 10:00 am followed by a service in the chapel at 11:30 am. Following the funeral, the family will attend a private family graveside service.
