Bobby Landon Spence, 84, of Big Island, Va., died Thursday, April 6, 2017. He and his wife, June Spence, shared 64 years of marriage.
Bobby was born Wednesday, November 23, 1932 in Bastrop, LA, a son of the late William (Bill) Lewis Spence and Hallie Burks Spence. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gene Spence and sister, Faye Ramsey.
He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Coolbaugh during the Korean War. He retired from Georgia Pacific where he diligently worked as an E.I. technician.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Steven L. Spence and wife, Diana, Cliffside, N.C.; daughters, Julia Johnson and husband, Richard, Glen Allen, Va. Yvonne St. Clair and husband, Allen, Glasgow, Va., and Cathy Harris and husband, Don, Rustburg, Va.; sisters, Betty Waugh, Lynchburg, Va., Sandra Spence, Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren, David, Stephanie, Melanie, Emily, Alex, Sarah and Jessica.; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg and from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Big Island Baptist Church. A celebration of Bobby’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Big Island Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Watkins and Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Big Island Cemetery on Sunset Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Island Baptist Church.
