Bonnie M. Matthews

August 21, 1940 — May 24, 2018

Bonnie M. (NEE McCoy) Matthews, 77, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. 

Bonnie is survived by her husband Roger D. Matthews, her children Dr. Kimberly Young (Robert) and Todd Matthews (Merrily) and five grandchildren Robert IV, Colin, Taylor, Nathan, and Graham. She is also survived by her sister Arlene Beall (Bill), and brothers Ralph McCoy (Diana), Charles McCoy (Joyce), and Robert McCoy. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents Ralph A. McCoy and Mildred A. McCoy and her in-laws Ralph A. Matthews and Marguerite Matthews.  

Bonnie was born on August 21, 1940 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of South Bend Central High School in South Bend, Indiana. She attended Union College and Ohio State University. Bonnie’s life work was being a loving wife and mother, and partnering with Roger in serving people with disabilities at Goodwill Industries.  

She was a volunteer at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church for prayer meetings, Stephen Ministries, COP, family promises, bell choir, and greetings. She was a doula at Good Samaritan Hospice, and a volunteer at the Emmaus Community and Heritage United Methodist Home, and was sincerely loved by everyone.  

Bonnie’s hobbies included painting, pottery, photography, decorating, camping, and traveling, especially to far away places. Throughout her life, Bonnie was constantly serving others, always willing to serve in any way needed through meals, prayers, and visits. She was a committed wife, devoted mother, and adoring grandmother. She joyfully cared for anyone the Lord placed in her life.  

Memorial services for Bonnie will be held on Sunday, June 10th, at 2:00 PM at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. There will be a concert of Bonnie’s favorite music at 1:30 PM by Brandon Mock, Greene Memorial music director. The service will be conducted by Reverend Gary Heaton.  

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Greene Memorial UMC or Good Samaritan Hospice.
