Bonnye Cotman Newton, 70, of Lynchburg, passed, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, in the presence of her family.
Bonnye, nothing short of an extraordinary woman, suffered from a rare disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, reuniting her with her beloved husband, Orson Benjamin Newton III.
Bonnye was born November 17, 1946 in Richmond, VA, daughter of the late Linwood Cotman and Jane Cotman. Bonnye was raised in Williamsburg; she graduated from both William & Mary and Lynchburg College, receiving her Master’s Degree in Education. Bonnye enjoyed a rich and fulfilling career within the Lynchburg City Schools as an educator and an administrator until her retirement after 37 years. Bonnye and her family attended First Presbyterian Church.
Bonnye was not only an educator of others, but a believer in lifelong learning. She was a veracious reader and was known to read two or three books per week. Bonnye’s passion for literature and education where only surpassed by her love and devotion to her daughter Brooke. Bonnye and Brooke enjoyed many great trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina together over many years where she would cherish her early morning walks along the shoreline looking for the oceans’ treasures brought in by the tides. It was not unheard of for Bonnye and Brooke to spend the entire day richly, soaking up the sun and playing in the cool Atlantic waters. Bonnye was known for preparing cherished food dishes both at home and at the beach that everyone always looked forward to.
Bonnye’s home on Trents Ferry road was a renowned destination for her children’s friends and neighbors alike. She hosted as she taught, lovingly, warmly and frankly. It was not uncommon for Bonnye to host Brookes’ friends even in the absence of her daughter. Bonnye’s company and friendship was valued by many and rivaled by few.
A devoted mother, a prolific learner, and educator with a singular purpose in the service of the Lynchburg City Schools and a fiercely loyal friend to so many.
Bonnye’s memory will live on through the lessons she taught us, the recipes she shared and the stories she told which did, and forever will inspire love in our hearts and our bellies. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughter Brooke Elizabeth Newton and her husband Nicholas Raymond Cash of Lynchburg and her brother Lin Cotman of Alexandria.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Kegney Brothers, 1118 Main Street, in downtown Lynchburg. The family will hold a private memorial service for Bonnye at a later date.
Donations in memory of Bonnye should be made to: Lynchburg City Public Schools or to the Lynchburg Public Library
