Bradley Russell Fitzgerald, 33, precious son, brother, grandson, nephew, and cousin, unexpectedly passed away, and was joyously welcomed to Heaven on November 27, 2015. He is at Home with Jesus, free and with his grandfather who loved him so very much. Death has no sting – there is only victory in Jesus and His finished work on the cross, forever sealing salvation for those who believe.
Bradley was the beloved son of Brad and Ruth Fitzgerald of Forest, Va. He resided in Boca Raton, Fl. His wit, intelligence, laughter and goodness will forever be missed. Abundant comfort and blessings have come from speaking with so many who have shared what he meant to them and all that he did.
Bradley was born on July 16, 1982 in Lynchburg at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Dr. Russell G. Fitzgerald. Bradley’s outgoing, charismatic personality could light up a room. He loved to laugh and have a good time as well as engage in intellectual conversations or debates. He grew up in Bedford County playing baseball and basketball. Among his favorite activities as a boy were rollerblading, skateboarding, fishing, computers and computer games. However, it was in junior high where he found his true passion and a talent for running. He went on to become a star cross country athlete at Jefferson Forest where he highlighted his high school running career by placing third in Group AA and ninth overall in the state his senior year. He was all-state, all-region and a proud member of Coach Jerome Loy’s 5-year club.
Bradley graduated from Jefferson Forest High School in 2000. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He went on to attend Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he continued running by making the varsity squad as a freshman and sophomore. Beginning in his junior year at Dickinson, Bradley discontinued running to focus on academics. As an East Asian Studies major, he earned an opportunity to study at Beijing University in China where he attended one semester from August through December of 2002.
Bradley loved China, the people and culture. This was one of the most exciting times of his life. One of the highlights of his time there was being able to tour ancient Chinese villages before they were forever flooded by the Three Gorges dam project. He took hundreds of photos and videos documenting his experiences, and his parents always looked forward to regular phone calls from him.
One of Bradley’s proudest achievements during his senior year at Dickinson was serving as the Associate Editor and Webmaster for the Christian humanist journal, The Clarion Review. He graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in East Asian Studies and a minor in Computer Science.
Following his graduation from Dickinson, Bradley continued graduate studies in Philosophy of Religion at Liberty University. During his time at Liberty, he worked as a graduate and teaching assistant in the Philosophy department. However, life and career called and he stopped just shy of completion. He was working as a business and marketing analyst at the time of his death in Boca Raton, Florida.
Bradley is survived by his parents, Brad and Ruth Fitzgerald of Forest, Va.; his sister Erin Caitlin Fitzgerald of Lynchburg; his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Joann Fitzgerald of Lynchburg, Va.; his maternal grandparents Louis and Eileen Day of Lomax, Il., and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of Bradley’s life will take place at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 7 p.m. with visitation starting at 6 p.m. During the service, Bradley’s parents would like to encourage those who knew him to share their thoughts and stories about him. The family asks to help others by giving to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
Romans 8:37-39: “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus.”
