Brian Francis Duffy, 78, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 2, 2011, in Wilmington, NC. He was the husband of the late Gail Taylor Duffy for 46 years.
Born December 4, 1932 in Hoboken, NJ, he was a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Weill Duffy.
Brian is survived by his children: James Duffy of Lynchburg; Diane Beecham and husband, Jeff, of Chapel Hill, NC; Lisa Tuttle and husband, Chris, of Fishersville, VA; Lorraine Harrell and husband, Jimbo, of Charlotte, NC; Moira Bauer and husband, Hank, of Charlotte, NC; Alison Duffy of Charleston, SC; and nine delightful grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Donald, Tom, Dennis, Peggy and Kathy.
From humble origins, Brian\"™s qualities led to a fulfilling professional and family life. He graduated from Passaic Valley High School (New Jersey) in 1951, where he was President of Student Government and played varsity basketball for four years. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and served in Korea during the Korean War on the USS Preston. He was also stationed in Morocco for part of his enlistment. After his Honorable Discharge, he worked a variety of jobs including loading railway boxcars to help support his family and attend college. He studied economics at Farleigh Dickinson University, graduating as salutatorian in 1958. In 1959 he married Gail Taylor. He conducted market research for pharmaceutical companies while selling furniture on evenings and weekends. His market research expertise led to his work with two advertising agencies in New York City before he joined CB Fleet in Lynchburg, Virginia. Over a twenty-six year career with CB Fleet, he rose to become President and Chief Executive Officer. He led Fleet\"™s remarkable, exponential growth by establishing a consumer end of the company while greatly improving the pharmaceutical side of the business focused on doctors and hospitals. He also expanded the business internationally by acquiring companies abroad.
He loved traveling around the world, both while in the Navy and developing CB Fleet internationally. After retiring, he traveled extensively with Gail. He was famous for his cooking talent and his many trips abroad served to augment his skills as well as his impressive menus. He was a lifelong Notre Dame fan \"" go Irish!
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 7, 2011, at 4:30 p.m. at Brian\"™s residence.
