Brian Howard Mason Bowen, Sr., 92, died October 16, 2014, in Lynchburg, VA.
Born August 8, 1922, he was the son of Charles Wesley Bowen, Jr. and Eleanor Hoffman Bowen. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Jane Barringer Bowen, his sister, Anne Marie Bowen Schwartz, and his brother, Dr. Lawrence Hoffman Bowen.
Brian is survived by a son: Brian Howard Mason Bowen, Jr.; two daughters: Lee Patterson Bowen Kelleher and her husband, Brian James Kelleher, Lou Hoffman Bowen Berquam and her husband, Theodore David Berquam, Jr. and four grandchildren: Mason Barringer Bowen, Margaret Bowen Kelleher, Carter Donavan Bowen and Elizabeth Burke Kelleher.
Educated in the Lynchburg city schools, he graduated from E. C. Glass High School in 1939, and received his B. S. degree with academic honors in Civil Engineering from Virginia Military Institute in 1943. He went immediately into Army service in WWII serving in Texas, North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. As a combat engineer with the Third Infantry Division he was awarded a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart. He and his platoon were the first allied troops to occupy Hitler
